Why Small Business Blogs Matter

What's Inside the Blog

Blogging.

It feels and sounds like just a mid-2000s word, right? You might be wondering, “who even blogs anymore?”

Here’s a surprise twist–everybody.

Even if blogging isn’t the hottest or newest topic on the marketing chatter board any more, the fact of the matter is that all the major brands (and all the successful smaller brands) have prioritized blogging as the ultimate means of content marketing within a larger digital marketing strategy.

You might be wondering, “what does blogging have to do with your digital marketing strategy–isn’t it just a platform to share random thoughts?” Not really.

Blogs are all about content, and if you’re strategizing right, you’re filling that blog with content that drives traffic, provides real value to your customers, and elevates your standing with the SEO gods (AKA, the algorithms). And if you know anything about SEO algorithms and search engine pages, you know how crucial it is to be in the first few results when those results pop up.

Believe it or not, blogging is the most organic, natural, and seamless way to improve that. But it also benefits your brand in a whole host of other ways.

The catch? You’re not actually reaping the benefits unless you’re blogging consistently.

That word–consistently–is going to be big here. Because, yes, blogging, in general, is going to be helpful for your brand as a whole, but if you’re not taking a consistent approach to your content marketing strategy, you’re ultimately squandering a lucrative marketing opportunity.
Curious about how blogging consistently can change your brand for the better? We thought you might be. The details are all laid out below.

5 Ways Consistent Small Business Blogs Can Better Your Brand

We’ll be real with you–the 5 reasons we’re about to share are just a drop in the bucket. When our clients ask us the best, most immediate change they can make to elevate their brand communication and web traffic is, we typically say blogging.

Why? Because it’s multifaceted, it’s organic, and it’s a great way to build connections with your audience.

So, definitely take note that consistent blogging will improve your brand in these 5 ways–but know the actual list of benefits is miles longer than just this post.

Drives Web Traffic & Feeds the SEO Algorithm

This is by far one of the most pressing reasons to get yourself and your brand on a blogging schedule. Every other facet of blogging is going to be advantageous, but likely, none more than the act of feeding the algorithm.

Don’t misinterpret us–providing value is important, elevating your brand awareness is important, and having an outlet to communicate directly to customers is important, too. But if there was a way you could do all of those things while appeasing the SEO algorithm gods–wouldn’t you?

That’s exactly what blogging can (and does) do–when you do it consistently. When you’re actively blogging, posting relevant topics, providing value for your customers, and not just going through the motions to keyword stuff, the algorithm is going to reward you for that. Why? Because even though the SEO algorithms are always changing, their primary focus is one thing–value.

Don’t buy it from us? That’s totally fine–take it from the big guys. HubSpot says that blogging helps “boost SEO quality by positioning your website as a relevant answer to your customers’ questions.”

If you can provide consistent, relevant content that the algorithms read as valuable, you’re going to rank higher on the search engine page results (SERPs)–bonus points if your readers actually want to read what you’re posting.

Consistent blogs drive natural, organic traffic to your website in a manageable way. PPC strategies are great, and they have their place, don’t get us wrong. But content marketing via consistent blogging can put your site on the map (or, you know, at least on the first page of the Google results).

Provides Actual Value to Your Audience

A copywriter works on a small business blog on her laptop.

We just said this in the above paragraph, but it’s worth repeating.

Posting valuable content is helpful, but if you’re doing it once every year or two, you’re not really offering your audiences (or the SEO algorithms) very much help. Don’t get us wrong–something is always better than nothing. And honestly, a blog never really loses value–it can provide you with evergreen views and drive traffic for years to come.

But if someone finds your website via a super helpful blog you posted two years ago and then realizes you haven’t posted since that blog, you’ll lose that audience. Why keep up with you if you’re not providing regularly scheduled high-quality content that could benefit them time and time again?

Here’s a pro tip–the longer someone stays on your site, the better. That means if someone clicks on your page because of one blog but then sees you have an entire archive full of valuable blogs and you’re consistently updating that, they’ll recognize you as a brand that’s committed to providing value.

Moral of the story here? Do your best to avoid keyword-stuffed blogs that are just chatter for the algorithm. Write quality blogs that your readers can actually glean value from–and then make sure you’re doing that consistently to reap the benefits.

A Direct Communication Portal to Your Customers

Consider your blog platform the easiest, most streamlined way to communicate with your customers. They can’t really talk back with you (you can open permissions to leave comments, of course, but that’s not really the function here)–but it’s an opportunity to communicate directly to them.

Your blog can be the go-to place to provide value, directly communicate your mission, update your customers, and share relevant news.

It’s a portal that brings your words right to your audience–and if you’re not taking advantage of that with consistent blogging, you’re missing out on an enormous opportunity to connect with your customers.

Offers Insight Into Your Brand

Remember how we just said that your blog is a place to communicate directly with your customer?

It’s also the best place to explain your brand to your customer. That means a consistently updated blog can be the perfect outlet for explaining your brand, offering insight into your mission, shining a light on your services or products, and giving your readers an inside look at who you really are.

Branding is always changing. Your business is always updating. Your audience needs to be kept in the loop, right? Your blog is a great platform for this purpose–and keeping your blog updated with new and exciting information shows your audience that if they have questions or want to know what’s new, there’s a place they can count on to find that information.

Establishes You as an Authority in the Industry

Want to be viewed as an authority in your industry? You better get to blogging. One of the best ways to build credibility in an industry is to become an authority blog. Rather, become a blog that’s viewed as the authority on a certain subject or within a certain industry.

If you’re a fishing brand and you want your customers to view you as the fishing experts with all the answers, you need to invest in upping your blogging game. Why? Because they need to know that if they search your blog, you’ll have the resources they need to answer their questions. If you don’t, they’ll go to someone else who can answer their questions. Right?

That means you’ll need to curate a quality blog with actual value–and you need to post on a regular schedule so you can show your audience they can count on you.

A small business copywriter sits on a desk, writing small business blog notes in her journal.

You could post the most SEO-optimized, value-driven blog in the world on any topic–but if you’re only posting once every few months, your customers likely aren’t going to view you as the authority. Why? Because, sure, your posts are great–but you’re inconsistent. They never know when you’ll post something else helpful, and in the meantime, they’re going to count on another brand that will commit to providing them with the answers they want.

Becoming an authority blog is as much about consistency as it is about high-quality and valuable content.
